The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released the cockpit voice recording (CVR) from Alaska Airlines Flight 261, which crashed in 2000, killing all 88 people on board.
The CVR captured the final moments of the flight, as the pilots struggled to regain control of the plane after a horizontal stabilizer trim system malfunction caused the aircraft to pitch up and down uncontrollably.
The recording reveals that the pilots were initially unaware of the problem, and that they initially attempted to troubleshoot the issue themselves.
However, as the situation became more dire, the pilots became increasingly desperate, and at one point, one of the pilots can be heard saying, "We're going to die."
The recording also captures the sound of the plane's impact with the ocean.
The NTSB's investigation into the crash found that the probable cause was the failure of the horizontal stabilizer trim system, which was caused by a faulty jackscrew assembly.
The NTSB also found that the pilots were not properly trained to handle the situation, and that they made several mistakes that contributed to the crash.
The release of the CVR is a reminder of the importance of aviation safety, and the need for pilots to be properly trained to handle emergencies.
